Studs:
Mississippi State offense: Dan Mullen’s offense combined for over 600 yards and 8 touchdowns through the air and on the ground. It looks like Chris Relf and Vick Ballard are primed for big seasons and if the Bulldogs offense keeps it up they could be sleepers in the SEC West.
Russell Wilson: Despite getting a late start learning the Badgers playbook Wilson looked comfortable and confident directing Wisconsin’s offense. He completed 10 of 13 passes for 255 yards and 2 tds and rushed twice for 62 yards and a TD.
Temple: In Steve Addazio’s first game as the Owls head coach his team killed Villanova 42-7. It was only two years ago that Temple lost to their in city rivals on opening night and after losing Al Golden to Miami it was nice to see the Owls offense clicking from the get go. Highly underrated junior running back Bernard Pierce went for 147 yards and three scores on the ground.
Georgia Tech Offense: The Yellow Jackets gained 662 yards and were actually able to throw the ball extremely well going 11 of 16 for 365 yards and 3 TDs. WR Stephen Hill had a monster game catching 4 passes for 182 yards and 2 scores.
Tanner Price: The sophomore from Texas had the Demon Deacon offense rolling until a leg injury forced him to leave the game in the fourth quarter. Even though Wake Forest went on to lose in OT, Price was very impressive going 18 of 31 for 289 yards and 3 TDs. Let’s hope the injury isn’t too serious, Price could give Wake the legit QB they've been looking for since Riley Skinner graduated.
Rutgers offense: Rutgers took on North Carolina Central, a school I had never heard of before yesterday. Even though the Scarlet Knights won 48-0, a closer look shows that their offense was less than impressive. Their QBs combined to go 15/34 (44%) with an interception while their running game managed only 3.3 yards per carry. Even though Big East defenses aren't much better, that simply won’t do. Look for Greg Schiano’s seat to continue getting hotter.
Utah: The Utes may be in for a rough year in their first season as a member of the BCS. They managed to gain only 292 yards against Montana St. last night, only 34 more than their FCS opponent. Good thing they don't have to face the Oregon offense this season.
Kentucky Offense: Kentucky’s game was the classic train wreck that you couldn't help but watch. Their offense was absolutely pathetic. The Wildcat O’line couldn't pass protect or run block, Matt Roark couldn’t catch anything, and Morgan Newton threw every pass a million miles per hour. Kentucky should have lost this game, but lucky for them Western Kentucky’s pass offense was even worse. Morgan Newton went 7 of 18 for 97 yards with 3 picks while WKU’s QB Kawaun Jakes went 9 of 27 for 93 yards with 4 picks. It was terrible.
