Not So Fast.... Stephen Garcia

Most people assumed when 5th year Senior QB Stephen Garcia was reinstated to South Carolina's football team this summer that he would be the starting QB on September 3rd when the Gamecocks play ECU. Head ball coach Steve Spurrier repeatedly said that there would be an open competition for the starting spot but most people figured that it was only a matter of time before Garcia was named the starter. However, on his call in show on Columbia radio this evening Coach Spurrier named true sophomore Connor Shaw the starting QB for Saturday's matchup vs. the Pirates. After a rough spring Shaw has repeatedly put up impressive performances in summer scrimmages, often posting superior numbers to Garcia. The job isn't Shaw's to keep yet, Spurrier also said that Garcia would start the second quarter, but if Shaw has the Gamecock offense clicking don't be surprised to see Garcia stay on the sideline.
