Why the Toronto Blue Jays are insanely lucky.

Anyone know who this guy is?

Thats right its fucking Santa Clause. I like most people stopped believing in Santa Clause by the time I was ten years old. Maybe it was because I never got the Super Nintendo I always wanted or maybe it was because it was impossible to believe that Santa liked burnt cookies but I just gave up believing in Jolly old Saint Nick. I went about 13 years without believing in Santa, until the Toronto Bluejays proved that the old fat guy really did exist.

When meeting Santa at the mall over the years it was always odd to me that no Santa was ever exactly the same. Their were always slight differences from one Santa to another and sometimes they were even different colors! It all makes sense to me now. The two most generous men in the baseball world are the respective General Managers for the White Sox and Angels Kenny Williams and Tony Reagins.

Between these two modern day Santa Clauses they have combined to save the Toronto Blue Jays 158.7million dollars over five seasons. Toronto's General Manager Alex Anthopoulos should be arrested for armed robbery. It would be one thing if these players were good and the Blue Jays just couldn't afford them. That is not the case however. Alex Rios and Vernon Wells are two of the worst players in baseball by any measurable statistic. While these two were once solid players at very low salaries they became increasingly disappointing players with each passing year after they got paid.

Neither of Rios or Wells have an On Base Percentage over .250! They are making a combined 34 million dollars to have a combined Wins Above Replacement Share of -1.8. (For those less saber-metrically inclined if a player has a WAR of 0 that means you could replace them with a minor leaguer and see no difference) These guys are worse than replacement players and are getting paid like they are elite level performers. As miserable as this Cubs season has been it makes me smile sometimes
knowing that Santa Clause does exist and he might one day give a child a great gift of Alfonso Soriano
or Carlos Zambrano.

THURSDAY NIGHT PICK

I am a huge fan of Wisconsin -35 vs. UNLV tonight. UNLV sucks majorly and when Wisconsin wins they tend to win big. I fully expect to turn on the tv when I am hammered in Seattle today and see that Wisconsin was arrested for 1st degree assault on the Running Rebels. Russell Wilson should have a good game too.

The rest of my picks will come in the gamblin bosses column tomorrow. Everyone have a great weekend!

You can't gloss over the fact that Rios had a 3.7 WAR last year. Granted, he's been absolutely abysmal this year, with a WAR of -1.2.
